After 4th year all the B.Tech. and B.E. students have four choices:

1.                M.S.

2.                CAT

3.                GATE

4.                Placements

GRE -- Graduate Record Examination

  •   It is an examination for admission to Masters in U.S. only.

  •  It is not competitive.
  •  It is for 1600 marks.

ü      1050-1300 – common score

ü      1300- 1400 – good

ü      1400- 1500 – very Good

ü      1500-1600 – Excellent

  •                      Time duration for GRE is 3 hours
  •                     It has two sections

·   Verbal Section which is usually tough and needs practice

·   Quantitative Section which is very easy tests our knowledge in basic mathematics but still practice is needed. Data Interpretation in this section is confusing and tedious.

·   Each is of 800 marks.

·   Verbal Section contains:

¾                       Antonyms

¾                       Analogies

¾                       Reading Comprehension

¾                       Completing Sentences

¾                       Analytical writing Assessment

Antonyms:

We should get acquainted with new words and know their precise meanings.

Analogies:

Good reasoning ability is needed

Sentence Completions are just like Fill In the Blanks. They are multiple choice questions where four choices are given.

Reading comprehension: Reading comprehension is the toughest of all. We should do as many passages as we can.

Analytical writing assessment is like writing general essays in our school level.

  •                         This section contains two questions each having two choices.
  •                         In this section we need to elevate our essay with strong points to get good marks.
  •                         Good vocabulary with incredibly correct usage of grammar is necessary for getting good marks. Our essay should be either in favour of given topic or contradict it but we shouldn’t do both simultaneously.
  •                         Another question is creating argument for a given passage. We should keenly understand the key points to answer this question.

Coaching centres are useful to some extent as they make us aware of the entire test pattern.

They test us regularly.

Some well known coaching centres are – VISU, Jeevas, Promat, TIME

Books :Some good books which are recommended for GRE preparation are:

The Princeton Review (Rs.425/) (A very good and useful book)

Barrons and Big book have word lists.

In the entire test there is scaling of marks. There is no negative marking.

First 12 questions should be answered very well.

Validity of GRE is 5 years.

Our GPA at under graduation level should be at least 3.

Fee is about Rs.6000/

We should book our examination dates online.

Confirmation letter, passport should be ready.

Test centres:

Good test centre should be chosen.

Banjara Hills, Genesis, Barkatpura, Madhapur test centres are preferred.

Application Procedure:

Academic year is divided into – Fall, Summer and Spring

Fall intakes are mostly preferred.

Score reporting takes time.

Online applications are to be filled and mark sheets of 10th, 11th, 12th and B.Tech (semester wise) should be sent.

Letter of recommendation should be sent (by our professors)

Statement of purpose is required in which we tell about ourselves and why we are interested in studying in that university.

Fee varies from university to university.

We have to arrange our credit card.

Both Public and Private universities are there. Public universities are preferred. Some public universities give financial aid to students.

TOEFL: Test of English as a foreign language

TOEFL is for 120 marks.

It tests us in the following areas:

a)                Reading

b)                Speaking

c)                Writing

d)                Listening

Reading passages is for about 51 marks. There is scaling of marks.

Listening (30 marks) requires concentration and we should be fast in noting key points. We should be able to understand the slang.

Speaking(30 marks): Each passage is given 20 minutes’ time. We are given a topic and 360 seconds time to prepare. We have to speak on that topic for about 60 seconds.

CAT (Common Aptitude Test)

  •                         CAT- (Usually held on 3rd Sunday of November)
  •                         Study in U.K. requires 2 years work experience and GMAT score.
  •                         Good institutes for administration oriented studies:
  •                         IIM, SPJain, Nasi Munji, Symbiosis
  •                         We need coaching and should choose timings carefully. Short term and long term coaching are offered.
  •                         CAT is competitive.
  •                 It has 3 sections:

1)                Data interpretation

2)                Quantitative section

3)                Verbal section

4)                Speed matters and sectional cutoffs are there. Minimum of 97 percentile is required. We may also have group discussion and personal interview.

5)                Coaching centres: TIME, Career Launcher, IMS

GATE

The Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) is

an All India examination conducted by The Indian

Institutes of Technology and the Indian Institute of

Science, Bangalore, on behalf of the National

Coordinating Board - GATE, Department of

Education, Ministry of Human Resource

Development, Government of India
.


All candidates of GATE will appear in a single paper of

3 hours duration and of 150 Marks.
